American Symbols and Landmarks
**American Flag: The first US flag was decided upon on June 14, 1777. It had 13 stars and 13 stripes. As states were added to the United States, stars and stripes were added to the flag. It was later decided that only stars would be added to the flag. The 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies while the stars represent the 50 states. The flag has officially changed 27 times as new states were added to the US. VIDEO - SONG
**Bald Eagle: The Bald Eagle became a symbol of the United States in 1782. It is our national bird. The eagle was chosen as a symbol of strength, courage and freedom. The Uncle Sam symbol was published and made famous by several magazines during the Civil War. Legend has it that the bell was rung when the Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The Liberty Bell weighs 2,000 pounds and is made of copper and other metals.
